COUNCILLOR Tom Murphy was elected cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown County Council at the council’s Annual General Meeting last week.
Cllr Murphy, a representative of the Fianna Fáil party, was first elected to the county council in 2002. He has represented the Glencullen-Sandyford Local Electoral Area since 2009.
Cllr Murphy was educated at Our Lady of the Wayside, Kilternan and St Benildus College, Kilmacud.
A keen sportsman, he played football with Stars of Erin, Wayside Celtic and served as an assistant coach with De La Salle Palmerstown.
Speaking at the AGM, the newly-elected cathaoirleach said: “It is a great honour to be elected cathaoirleach of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown.
“I look forward to engaging with all stakeholders over the course of my term to improve the delivery of council services especially around housing and accessibility, enhanced recreational amenities particularly in our upland areas, and in promoting tourism and enterprise throughout the county.”
Cllr Kate Feeney was elected Leas Chathaoirleach at the meeting.
Cllr Feeney, who is also a member of Fianna Fáil, was elected in the Blackrock Local Electoral Area in 2014.
A qualified accountant, she was educated at NUI Galway.
The Dún Laoghaire Business Improvement District was just one of the many local groups that offered a “massive thank you” to outgoing cathaoirleach, Cllr Cormac Devlin.
“Since taking on the role in June 2016, Cormac has been a great supporter of all the projects Dún Laoghaire BID has been involved in, and more importantly, he has been a terrific advocate of local businesses,” the group stated.
“We’d like to welcome the new cathaoirleach, Cllr Tom Murphy of Sandyford, to the role and look forward to working with him for the betterment of the town and all of Dún Laoghaire Rathdown county.”
