Southside artists feature in major new show

Westmoreland Street by Paul McCabe wil be one of the works on show.

A SOUTHSIDE artist whose work has been featured in New York’s Times Square is set to appear at Ireland’s premier art show Art Source, which will be held at the RDS from November 11-13.

Anthony Wigglesworth, from Dun Laoghaire, whose animation film was shown in Iceland’s Reykjavik Concert Hall will showcase his work in front of 15,000 people at the year’s biggest art festival.

The film also featured in the Irish National Concert Hall, the Irish Film Institute and many other theatres as part of his project that incorporates animation with his own piano composition and ink drawing.

Since completing a masters in music and media technology, his work has been featured in American website see.me’s digital exhibition in New York.

“My mediums are oil on canvas and ink on paper,” he explained. “I am inspired by the creation of patterns.

“At my core, I’m an artist who is inspired by the natural world to produce abstract works and I love creating something from the unknown.”

Another artist taking part is Paul McCabe from Avondale Terrace in Perrystown.

Delivering three babies and quenching infernos hasn’t dampened the artistic talent of the retired Dublin fireman.

“I paint with oil on canvas but I set out my stall with every painting,” Paul revealed. “I think having to follow strict procedure in the fire service made me very disciplined in that regard.

“I’ve concentrated on city scapes of Dublin in recent years, many of which have a distinctive wet look, moody theme.

“I love to paint the contrast of wet roads after a typical Dublin downpour with the sun breaking through.

“I retired from the fire service eight years ago but the job was an amazing experience,” he added. “You got to see the good and bad of Dublin.”

There is an opportunity for visitors to the show to own a piece of original artwork in Art Source’s unique 100 for €100 project, with pieces available on a first-come first-served basis.

Art Source features over 120 contemporary artists and 30 Irish and international galleries gathering together to showcase painting, sculpture, photography, illustration, prints and ceramic art.

From cutting edge contemporary art, realism and portraiture, to abstract art and landscapes, Art Source 2016 will showcase it all in one place and give visitors a fantastic opportunity to meet the artists and buy directly from them for three exciting days in November.

There is a huge emphasis on visitor involvement at Art Source, and this year the show features an amazing interactive animation exhibition, hosted by twice Academy Award and BAFTA-nominated Cartoon Saloon.

The Irish company behind such hits as The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea will be hosting special animation workshops aimed at creating and fostering the next generation of budding cartoon artists.

On Saturday and Sunday, Cartoon Saloon will be hosting the Shapeshifters workshops for 8-12-year-olds. These free classes can be booked at the show.

Art Source also features a themed free Art Explorers workshop for children up to sevenyears-old.

Art Source takes place at the RDS from November 11 to 13. Admission is €10 for adults and €8 for OAPs. Children under 16 are free only if accompanied by a parent or guardian.
