DUBLIN’S much loved annual Opera in the Open event returns to the Amphitheatre in the Civic Offices, Wood Quay, for lunchtime concerts every Thursday during the month of August from 1pm to 2pm.
The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Brendan Carr said: “It is my great pleasure to invite everyone to come along and enjoy the 17th Opera in the Open Season in the amphitheatre at the Civic Offices.
“I extend my congratulations to David Wray and the cast and crew for bringing each opera to life.
“My thanks go also to Ray Yeates, Dublin City Arts Officer and his staff for their dedication to this fantastic project. I wish it every success and hope you enjoy the performances.”
The season opened with the ‘Gondoliers” by Gilbert & Sullivan on Thursday, August 4. This opera was due to be staged in the Gaiety Theatre on Easter Monday in 1916 but had to be cancelled due to the rebellion.
“For many years now with no sign of waning, Opera in the Open is one of Dublin’s August cultural highlights,” said Ray Yeates, Arts Officer, Dublin City Council.
“Take this opportunity to find out more about opera and relax in the leafy surrounds of some of Dublin’s hidden gems.”
The amphitheatre is located just off Wood Quay and is easily accessible from Winetavern Street, which runs up to Christ Church Cathedral.
All events are free and no booking is required. As this is an outdoor performance, patrons are advised in the event of bad weather to check www.dublincity.ie for updates on the morning of each performance.
The full list includes Acis & Galatea – Handel on August 11, Die Fledermaus – J Strauss on August 18 and Eugene Onegin – Tchaikovsky on August 25.
