Members of Meteors Ladies' Basketball Club in action

METEORS Ladies’ Basketball Club recently celebrated the end of their 50th season in Coláiste Íosagáin in Booterstown.

The occasion was marked with an end of season club day and awards ceremony. A number of the club’s teams got together for a day of basketball games and a barbeque.

The award for Club Person of the Year went to Tommy Browne, the father of two ex-players who continues to be involved with the club.

Tommy runs the club’s Twitter account and is the time and score keeper for the senior teams. He is also the Venue Officer for the Premier League team’s home games.

The Pat Clarke Award for Junior Person of the Year went to Nicole Sanchez Fitzpatrick. Nicole is a member of the under 17 team and has been a club member since under 10.

She was awarded for her “all round helpfulness” in the club and particularly her work with the academy, according to club PRO Maeve Cafolla.

The club is Ireland’s longest running ladies’ basketball team, having started in 1965 and has continuously played at the top level of women’s basketball in Ireland.

“The ethos of the club has always been to grow from within,” said Breda Fogarty, a club member.

The club currently has 13 teams and a team in the Women’s Premier League. There are teams at all age groups and the club also runs a basketball academy for girls aged between 6-10.

The Meteors basketball club has also had a steady number of international players in their ranks, keeping a steady presence on the Irish ladies’ team.
