HSE Dublin and North East is encouraging individuals whose lives have been impacted by a loved one’s addiction to take part in a free eight-week support programme launching this September in Corduff.
The Support Group for Families and Friends Affected by Addiction has been developed to support parents, partners, adult siblings, relatives and friends who are experiencing the challenges associated with a loved one’s substance use.
The programme will begin on Monday, 14 September, and will take place weekly from 10.30am to 12.00pm at Corduff Primary Care Centre, Blackcourt Road, Corduff.
Participation is free of charge.
Facilitated by HSE staff, the group combines education and therapeutic support, providing participants with a confidential and supportive environment where they can learn, reflect and connect with others facing similar experiences.
Over the course of eight weeks, participants will explore a range of topics including:
- How addiction affects family members and loved ones
- Understanding patterns and behaviours associated with addiction
- Setting healthy boundaries
- Self-care and wellbeing
- Effective communication strategies
- Building resilience and coping skills
The programme is designed to help participants gain a deeper understanding of addiction while also developing practical tools to support their own wellbeing.
Speaking about the initiative, Celine Maurer a Psychotherapist and Counsellor for HSE addiction Services said: “When a person is struggling with addiction, the impact is often felt across the entire family and wider support network.
“Many people can feel isolated, overwhelmed or unsure of how best to support their loved one while also looking after themselves.
“This group offers a safe and confidential space where participants can learn from facilitators and from one another, gain new insights, develop coping strategies and access meaningful support.”
The programme is suitable for anyone affected by a loved one’s addiction and can be attended as a standalone support intervention, as a follow-on from treatment programmes or alongside individual counselling and other supports.
