The Ukrainian Volunteers of Ireland hosted an event in Swords yesterday to mark and celebrate 35 years of Ukrainian independence.
Speaking at the event Sinn Féin Deputy Ann Graves said:
“I am delighted to be here today and join with my Ukrainian friends to celebrate Ukraine’s Independence Day. I want to thank Ukrainian Volunteers of Ireland for giving me the honour of speaking at this important event.
“August 19th marked 35 years since the restoration of Ukraine’s independence. After 70 years of Soviet rule Ukraine established itself as a national democracy. The attempts by Moscow in 1989 and 1990 to stop the march of Ukrainian independence failed. Beyond Ukraine, the world also nervously awaited the outcome of Ukraine’s struggle to become independent.
“I remember so well listening to every news bulletin here in Ireland as news broke about the Berlin wall coming down, the unification of Germany, the iron curtain finally and permanently being lifted. This was a hugely historic time for Ukraine and your neighbours. A new dawn broke. There was great hope that people’s in the former Soviet bloc would be able to embrace democracy and freedom.
“Unfortunately, in February 2022 your world was shattered by the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. An illegal act that quite rightly has been utterly condemned the world over.
“We were all shocked by the news of the invasion. Irish people opened their hearts and responded to the needs of Ukrainians fleeing the awful violence of the war. Ireland became home to over 121,000 Ukrainians. With over 84,000 staying in Ireland, calling this country home.
“I want to pay tribute to all Ukrainians who have contributed to Irish life. Our country is more diverse and richer because of your contribution. I hope the relationship between Ukraine and Ireland continues to grow and deepen over time.
“Here in Swords people simply did the right thing. I will always remember how my neighbours opened up a shop to collect clothes and food to send to the people in Ukraine. This shop remained open for two years. A small, but symbolic act of humanity and solidarity.
“It is in that spirit of solidarity that I want to sincerely wish our Ukrainian neighbours and friends a very happy and safe Independence Day and I hope with all my heart that peace will return to you land before we gather here again next year.”
