Sinn Fein Deputy Paul Donnelly says he welcomes the end of the investigation into the death of George Nkencho.
“The length of time in getting to this point is not acceptable and it is now more important than ever that the DPP will make a decision as quickly as possible,” the Dublin Mid West TD said.
“There are always lessons to be learned from tragic incidents like the death of Mr Nkencho.
“I echo the families call for better mental health services and especially George’s sister, Gloria’s statement that “it is essential to recognise the impact of George’s mental health struggles” and that “as a society we must acknowledge the need for proper training and resources to equip law enforcement agencies in effectively handling individuals experiencing mental health crises”.
“We know that our mental health services are not fit for purpose and that early intervention and proper care and support for those with mental health issues.
“The family of Mr Nkencho and the Garda involved deserve a timely decision.
“I also look forward and would ask that the Garda Ombudsman’s report on this tragic death is published with complete transparency as soon as possible.”
