Concern that at least five aircraft were targeted in laser attacks as they came in to land at Dublin Airport

Sinn Féin TD for Dublin West, Paul Donnelly has expressed concern at the disturbing news that at least five aircraft were targeted in laser attacks as they came in to land at Dublin Airport on one night last week.

The attacks forced the pilots to take evasive action which could have put the lives of pilots, flight crews and passengers at risk.

The aeroplanes were attempting to land at the airport after 9pm last Friday when they were targeted by laser pen attacks sparking a series of security responses.

It is understood that the lasers are thought to have been used in the Blanchardstown area.

Deputy Donnelly urged parents and guardians to confiscate any lasers that their child or young person has access to and not to buy them as Christmas presents.

“Thankfully nobody was injured in this instance but interfering with a plane in flight is a reckless and irresponsible action, what might serve as amusement to some, could potentially become a major disaster,” he said.

“I urge those responsible to stop and ask parents to be conscious of theses pens and do not allow kids to have use of them.

“I would also like to commend the pilots and ground staff at Dublin Airport for handling the laser targeting in a safe and professional manner.”
