A DUBLIN Fire Brigade emergency services controller was presented with an award in Blanchardstown last week for helping save the life of the man who trained him for the job.
Darragh Clarke picked up his award from the International Academy of Emergency Dispatchers (IAED) after being nominated for talking a 999/112 caller through CPR on a patient.
What Darragh didn’t know was that the caller was Cora McNabb, daughter of the patient Dominic McNabb.
Thankfully, Dominic survived with the help of Darragh’s calm instructions to Cora, which ensured that he was given the best possible chance of recovery.
Paramedics, Advanced Paramedics and an emergency doctor arrived on scene shortly after and provided advanced life support to Dominic, who regained a strong cardiac output before transport to hospital.
Darragh later learned of the amazing coincidence that the patient was Dominic, who had trained him in dispatch and control, prior to him starting in the Eastern Regional Control Centre.
And last week Darragh was presented with his Navigator Dispatcher of the Year award by Pam Stewart, Chair of the board of certification at IAED.
Dublin Fire Brigade Third Officer, John Keogh, also presented Dominic’s daughter, Cora, with a DFB Good Samaritan coin in recognition of her stepping in when she was needed.
The coin was designed to be used to recognise ordinary civilians who were willing to help when help is needed.
