Kickboxing girls go for gold

Red Stars Eliza Bluma, Dayna Walsh, Hannah MacLoughlin, Nazreen Flannery and Robyn McDonnell with coach Jon Mackey.

THE now famous fighting girls from Red Star Kickboxing are poised to take on the best in the world in the upcoming junior world kickboxing championships in Italy.

This year Red Star, based in Glasnevin, are fielding six athletes who will compete with the junior Irish kickboxing team.

All six made the important qualification to the team earlier in the year by winning their respective weight categories at the All-Ireland Junior National Championships.

The girls have been training all summer long to improve their fitness and their ring strategy says coach, Jon Mackey.

"Every year Red Star kickboxing have had increased numbers of junior athletes participating with the Irish national team,” he continued.

“This a credit to the work we are doing at Red Star kickboxing in relation to creating a pathway for juniors to participate at the highest standard of their chosen sport.

“These girls continue to impress me with their dedication and commitment to their sporting goals.

“They've been training five days a week, both in their tactical strategies and their fighting fitness.

“The fact that they are doing this all through their summer holidays is very impressive.

“They've been training with me since they were six or seven years of age and I hope they will continue to develop into the senior ranks when the time is right."

The girls leave for Italy on September 15, and we wish them the very best of luck!
