AN POST is coming under pressure to keep the Finglas East Post Office open following news of its proposal to close it as reported in Northside People last week.
Local TD, Noel Rock (FG), has described the proposal to close the office at Spar on Glasnevin Avenue as “short sighted and unacceptable”.
The post office is due to close next month following the resignation of the current postmistress.
Deputy Rock launched a campaign to save the post office last week with a petition that has already gathered thousands of signatures.
“I would urge people to join my campaign to save services and protect our community,” he said.
The Dublin North West TD has already met with party colleague and Minister for Communications, Denis Naughton and says he will be continuing discussions with senior An Post management over the coming days.
Finglas East Post Office saw investment of over €100,000 five years ago to protect it against burglaries, and it’s one of the busiest post offices in the area.
Local politicians are pointing the finger of blame for the post office’s planned closure at Fine Gael and Cllr Paul McAuliffe (FF) called on Deputy Rock to explain the decision.
“Deputy Rock can wring his hands all he wants but this is a decision backed by his party,” he said.
“The winding down of the Post Office network is a consequence of the Government's failure to bring forward a strategy in the area.
“It’s hypocritical of a local Fine Gael TD to claim to be rigorously campaigning to save the post office but at the same time refusing to use the direct influence he has as a member of the Government benches to put pressure on the minister.”
Sinn Fein councillor, Noeleen Reilly, described the planned closure as "disgraceful".
"It is not acceptable that An Post have taken the decision to close such a busy post office," she said
