BALLYMUN locals got their first look at plans for a new Lidl development in the area at an open day in Ballymun Civic Centre last week.
Earlier this year local councillors voted to dispose of a three acre €2.5 million site just off Main Street on Balcurris Road where three blocks of flats once stood.
Lidl Ireland GMBH was selected as the preferred bidder after a tendering process.
The new development is expected to consist of a Lidl outlet, four other retail units and 364 student bedrooms.
Last week’s event was well attended with local residents and politicians given a chance to view the plans and discuss the new store with Lidl staff.
Alan Barry, Director of Property at Lidl Ireland, says DCU has welcomed the student accommodation aspect of the plans.
“The development comes at a time when there is a significant requirement for student accommodation due to increasing student numbers at DCU and across Dublin,” he said.
“The public meeting was received very positively and a significant number of signatures were collected on the day in support of the Lidl development.
“Local residents are extremely keen to see increased retail competition brought to the area.”
Ballymun has been lacking in shopping facilities since Tesco closed three years ago, with only one major retailer, SuperValu, serving the local community.
Lidl operates over 150 stores in Ireland.
