ST PATRICK’S Brownies Guides and the family and friends of an eight-year-old with a life-threatening condition are pulling together to raise money for a specially commissioned bike.
Lucy Eccles, from Blanchardstown, suffers from a genetic disorder called Coffin Siris Syndrome. The extremely rare condition affects all aspects of Lucy’s life as she lives with intellectual and physical disabilities.
Despite all this, Lucy is described as “a very, happy little girl who faces each obstacle life throws at her with a big smile”.
The highlight of her week is attending St Patrick’s Brownies on a Monday evening.
Lucy’s mother, Noeleen, says the bike will bring “a bit of fun” to the Corduff native.
“A lot of her life has been taken up with therapy and appointments. This is a chance for her to be like other kids on their bikes”.
The specially commissioned bike is estimated to cost around €2,000. Noeleen says the bike would greatly benefit her daughter as she has major mobility issues.
At the moment, whenever Lucy needs to go anywhere she must use a buggy.
“A bike would give her more independence and would also be easier for her to get around on Girl Guide trips,” Noeleen explained.
Lucy has also been hospitalised with pneumonia numerous times but the more mobile she is, the less likely she is to suffer from the repeated serious chest infections common with Coffin Siris Syndrome.
A bag pack will take place in Dunnes Stores Blanchardstown on Saturday, 10 September and volunteers are welcome.
Anyone interested in making a donation can contact Mary on 086-1260748 or Noeleen on 087-9249983.
