YOUNG pupils from St Joseph’s GNS in Finglas were at Dunsink Observatory last week to help launch a new national reading programme.
‘Be a Summer Star’ runs in Dublin libraries until August 31 and children and families are invited to get involved in the initiative that encourages students to read more.
To take part children just need to ask for a reading card at their local library and read any six books over the summer holidays. At various stages boys and girls receive rewards to encourage them to keep reading.
“Obviously reading is at the heart of the library programme but there are also plenty of activities to be enjoyed at your local library along the way,” said Dublin City Librarian, Margaret Hayes.
“Children will have a chance to go on adventures with the click of a magic stick, hear about the fourth little pig, make a dream box, do some samba drumming and see the ever popular No Strings puppet show.”
Those who take part in the challenge will be invited to an event in their local library in September to celebrate their participation and receive a goody pack.
