THERE were lots of smiles in Finglas last month when the pupils and staff of St Paul’s YEP celebrated the official opening of their new school at the old Patrician College on Deanstown Avenue.
The school was originally established at the sacristy of St Oliver Plunkett’s Church in Rivermount Parish during the late ‘70s to cater for children aged 10-16.
It later moved to the corner of Main Street and Ballygall Road in Finglas Village, but the premises was too small.
St Paul’s then moved to the former Patrician Brother’s College after Patrician amalgamated with Mater Christi to become New Cross College but the official opening only took place last month.
The opening day included guests from St Paul’s, the Department of Education, Crosscare (Patrons), Augustinians, Patrician Brothers, local agencies and the local community.
However the most important guest was Corporal Bart McCabe, who was invited to unveil a plaque marking the occasion. Bart was a former pupil of Patrician College, and also of St Paul’s, and provided a historic link between both schools.
St Paul’s principal, David Carter, outlined to all the huge positive improvements the relocation has made for pupils, staff and the programme of St Paul’s. He also thanked the many people involved in facilitating the move.
Bart unveiled a plaque marking the Patrician Brothers continued commitment to Finglas since 1967, and their generosity to St Paul’s.
“The day was a great success and the positive and warm atmosphere was helped by the pupils of St Paul’s who welcomed and hosted guests so well,” said Mr Carter.
