Ballymun goes wild!

PUPILS from Ballymun schools went wild for National Biodiversity Week when they took part in a local nature trail experience in Poppintree Park on May 16.

Students from Scoil an tSeachtar Laoch and Our Lady of Victories Boys and Girls National Schools took part in the event organised by Global Action Plan (GAP).

National Biodiversity Week is all about connecting people with nature and on the school nature trail, pupils learnt all about the trees, bugs and birds that live right on their doorstep in Poppintree Park.

The youngsters were shown how to identify bugs, taught the importance of native trees and discovered fascinating facts about the history, myths and legends of Irish forestry.

They then explored the woodlands to discover all the different insects that can be found there and learned how to catch and identify them. Finally, the trail ended at the pond and wetland areas in the park with a spot of bird watching, where Coots, Moorhens, Mallards and the resident Heron put on a great show.

“Biodiversity week highlights the range of animals and plants accessible on our doorstep,” said Padraic Creedon, Education Officer with Global Action Plan.

“It also highlights how important trees, birds and insects were to Irish people throughout history. They have been intertwined in our customs, laws and legends for as long as people have lived on this island. This was the perfect week to celebrate that fact.”

Global Action Plan programmes in Ballymun are supported by Dublin City Council.
