Fianna Fáil Senator Lorraine Clifford-Lee has called for urgent action to address the growing shortage of parking spaces at Rush and Lusk train station.
The Fianna Fáil Senator warned that commuters are being left unable to access one of the area’s most important public transport links.
She said she has raised the issue directly with Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien and has also met with Iarnród Éireann to discuss potential solutions to the capacity problems affecting commuters across north County Dublin.
Senator Clifford-Lee said the situation at Rush and Lusk train station has become “increasingly unsustainable” as population growth in the area continues to outpace transport infrastructure.
“Every morning I hear from commuters who are struggling to access the train because the car park is already full,” she said.
“People are leaving home earlier and earlier yet still finding no available spaces when they arrive at the station. Residents are forced to miss work, college, and important appointments because they simply cannot access the train.”
Senator Clifford-Lee said the issue reflects wider pressures on transport infrastructure across Fingal, where significant housing development has taken place in recent years.
“North County Dublin is helping to meet Dublin’s housing needs, and while new homes are welcome, infrastructure must keep pace with population growth,” the Fianna Fáil Senator noted.
“People are moving into these communities because they are told public transport is available nearby, but when commuters cannot find a parking space at the station, that transport link becomes unreliable and inaccessible. We need joined-up planning that ensures transport infrastructure grows alongside housing development,” she said.
Senator Clifford-Lee said she will continue working with the Minister and Iarnród Éireann to identify solutions that improve access for commuters and help meet growing demand at stations across Fingal.
“This issue has a real impact on people’s daily lives. I am actively engaging with Iarnród Éireann and the Minister to find practical solutions that will give commuters certainty and ensure they can depend on public transport to get to work, education and appointments,” she said.
