Fingal County Council has launched the first-ever Active Cities Week in Fingal, which will run from 23 – 30 September as part of the 2026 European Week of Sport.
The initiative is being delivered through a partnership between the Council’s Community Department and Active Cities.
The free week-long event programme will feature a diverse range of activities, taster sessions, community events and inclusive initiatives designed to encourage more people to get active and embrace healthier lifestyles.
Supporting the Active Cities vision to engage, maintain and increase participation in sport and physical activity, the initiative offers residents of all ages and abilities new opportunities to move more, connect with their communities and enjoy the benefits of an active lifestyle.
The official launch of Active Cities Week took place on Friday, 4 September.
The event showcased the wide range of activities taking place across Fingal’s Community Centres and Active Spaces.
The event included a showcase of light activities such as ballet and chair yoga, along with speeches from the Mayor of Fingal to mark the launch and formally unveiled Fingal’s Community Centres as Active City Centres.
Launching the initiative at Racecourse Community Centre in Baldoyle, Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Tony Murphy said: “Active Cities Week is about making it easier and more enjoyable for people to get moving, regardless of their age, ability or fitness level.
“With such a wide range of free activities on offer across Fingal, there is something for everyone to try.
“Whether it’s taking the first step towards a more active lifestyle, discovering a new hobby, or simply meeting new people in the community, I encourage everyone to get involved.
“Physical activity plays a vital role in our health and wellbeing, and Active Cities Week is a fantastic opportunity to experience the benefits first-hand while having fun.”
The programme for Active Cities Week features a wide range of free activities, from Zumba Dancing to Circuit Training, Badminton and Walking and Talking.
Throughout the week of festivities, there is an activity for all ages and abilities to get involved in.
Other highlights include Beginners Hatha Yoga class at Saint MacCullins, Lusk, circuit training sessions at Parslickstown House or enrol into ‘Fitness to Football for Teens – 5 Week Programme 1-hour Sessions’ at Applewood Community Centre.
Longer-term programmes exist for up to several weeks such as the ‘5 Week Active Programme’ involving both mental and physical activities based in the Fingal Liam Rodgers Centre.

From organised classes and sports sessions to community-based activities, the programme is designed to help people build lasting habits that support healthier, more connected communities.”
Developed around the four key pillars of the World Health Organisation’s Global Action Plan on Physical Activity, Fingal’s Active Cities Week aims to encourage and support active lifestyles by promoting:
Active Systems – strengthening partnerships and community supports
Active Environments – making use of local spaces and facilities
Active Societies – fostering a culture that values physical activity
Active People – creating opportunities for everyone to participate
