James Larkin Road reopens as €25m water main works progress

James Larkin Road has reopened to traffic following the installation of a new section of high-pressure water main in north Dublin.

More than 1.9km of pipeline has now been installed as part of Uisce Éireann’s €25 million North City Arterial Main project.

The project involves laying 5.5km of new trunk water main and is intended to reduce the risk of supply interruptions to approximately 160,000 properties across the Dublin region.

Work is continuing on Thornville Road and Greendale Road, with some short weekend works also planned for Kilbarrack Road.

Uisce Éireann said the work in the Greendale and Thornville Road areas was scheduled during the summer holidays to limit disruption to families and nearby school communities.

Construction has reached the junction of James Larkin Road, Howth Road and Greendale Road.

It will move north along Howth Road and Dublin Road towards Bayside Boulevard over the coming months.

No further lane closures are planned during the remainder of the project. Traffic will instead be managed using a stop-go system as construction progresses.

Access to homes, businesses and emergency services will be maintained throughout the works.

Uisce Éireann’s Jessica Dale said the reopening of James Larkin Road represented an important milestone for the project.

“We’re pleased to be reaching this milestone and reopening the James Larkin Road as works continue to progress across the project,” she said.

“This investment will help strengthen north Dublin’s water network and provide a more secure and reliable drinking water supply for local homes and businesses for many years to come.

“We understand these works can be disruptive, and we’d like to thank the local community for their patience and cooperation to date.”

The new main will connect with the existing arterial network, creating an additional route through which water can be supplied to homes and businesses.

Uisce Éireann said much of the existing Greater Dublin Area water network was developed to serve a population of approximately 500,000 but now supports around two million people.

The North City Arterial Main forms part of the Water for Growth programme, which includes 30 water infrastructure projects planned for the eastern region over the next decade.
