Corkery welcomes opening of Swords Surgical Hub

The Deputy Mayor of Fingal, Councillor Luke Corkery, has welcomed the official opening of the North Dublin Surgical Hub in Swords by the Minister for Health, Jennifer Carroll MacNeill.

The new surgical hub, located in Swords Business Campus, is an acute medical facility that will significantly reduce day-case waiting lists in North Dublin and the wider region, by handling minor surgeries and outpatient consultations.

Speaking following the opening, Cllr. Corkery said: “I’m thrilled that our new surgical hub is set to open to patients on 29th June, and it was great to have Minister Jennifer Carroll MacNeill out in Swords this morning. This is a modern, state-of-the-art facility and I’m genuinely impressed by how well it’s been fitted out. The surgical hub is a really important step forward in the delivery of local healthcare services in Swords.

“This will cut through waiting lists for day procedures and free up bed space in hospitals like Beaumont. For local people in Swords but also across North County Dublin, it means receiving care in a well-staffed HSE facility right on our doorstep.

“There are four operating theatres here as well as two minor procedure units, and thanks to that additional capacity, the surgical hub will be able to operate six days a week, between 8am and 8pm. This facility has the potential to deliver up to 10,000 day-case and minor procedures annually, massively improving access to planned care.

“I want to join the Minister in commending the HSE team who have worked hard to make the surgical hub a reality, including regional executive officer Sara Long and IHA manager Paddy Clerkin.

“This is a big year for delivery of local healthcare services in Swords. I was also able to speak to the Minister about the progress of the Swords Primary Care Centre, located a short distance from the town centre in the former Hertz building, just off the R132. When fully operational, the primary care centre will provide a broad range of services, including primary care, GP, disability and mental health services. HSE staff have moved into the building, and it will be fitted out with a planning application submitted for change of use. It’s expected that services will begin on a phased basis.”

The opening of the surgical hub was also attended by local TD Minister Darragh O’Brien, Fingal West TD Grace Boland, Dublin Bay North TD Naoise Ó Muirí, and Balbriggan-Skerries Councillor Tom O’Leary.
