Clontarf councillors call for flood defence action ahead of council meeting

Recent flooding along Clontarf Promenade and other local amenities will be discussed at tonight’s meeting of Dublin City Council.

Clontarf councillors Donna Cooney (Green Party), Clodagh Ní Mhuiri (Fine Gael), Deirdre Heney (Fianna Fáil), Alison Field (Labour) and Karl Stanley (Social Democrats) have submitted an emergency motion, calling on Dublin City Council to seek an urgent meeting with the Office of Public Works.

The motion calls on Dublin City Council to meet with the OPW to discuss flooding in Clontarf with the Clontarf flood protection working group and other local stakeholders.

Recent heavy rainfall across Dublin has caused flooding on both the Northside and Southside; recent data from Met Éireann showed that January was the wettest January in Dublin since 1948.

The flooding has caused traffic disruption on DART services, Clontarf Promenade has seen flooding in recent weeks, and the River Dodder reached near record highs.

“There’s an immediate need for a shortened time frame for effective multi-disciplined flood protection designs and implementation, and the immediate access to funding to repair damages to amenities,” the motion read.
