Work set to begin on upgrade to wastewater network in Swords

Works are beginning this month on a major upgrade to the wastewater network along Balheary Road, Swords.

This investment by Uisce Éireann will play a vital role in supporting the community making it possible to deliver 2,980 new homes and ensuring the area can growth sustainably into the future.

The project will significantly increase capacity in the local network, improving system performance, reducing pressure on existing infrastructure, and helping to deliver the homes and services the Swords community needs.

Welcoming the start of construction, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage James Browne TD highlighted the importance of essential infrastructure in unlocking new housing and supporting thriving communities.

“The delivery of essential wastewater infrastructure is fundamental to meeting our housing targets as reflected in our new Housing Action Plan, ‘Delivering Homes, Building Communities’ and through record investment in the water sector.

“This project at Balheary Road will provide critical capacity to enable new homes in North County Dublin and serve the needs of the community in the Swords area.”

Speaking on behalf of Uisce Éireann, Padraic Fitzgerald (pictured above) said the project demonstrates how targeted investment in infrastructure underpins housing delivery and long-term growth.

“This investment at Balheary Road is a key enabler for new housing and future development in Swords.

“By increasing wastewater capacity now, we are helping to unlock development, support the local economy and provide resilient services for existing and future communities,” he said.

The works are being carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by GMC Utilities.

A portion of the scheme overlaps with Fingal County Council’s R132 Road Connectivity Project, which will see the Estuary Roundabout converted to a signalised junction.

Following agreement between Uisce Éireann and Fingal County Council, the eastern section of the sewer network will be delivered by the local authority as part of the road connectivity works, ensuring a coordinated and efficient approach.

Fingal County Council’s Director of Infrastructure and Transport, Matthew McAleese, added:

“Fingal County Council is pleased to work in partnership with Uisce Éireann on the delivery of this important infrastructure.

“Aligning the wastewater works with the R132 Road Connectivity Project allows us to maximise efficiency on the ground while supporting sustainable development and new housing in the area.”

The project works involve the installation of more than 360 metres of new wastewater pipeline between the Balheary Road/Castlegrange Green junction and the Estuary Roundabout, including works along the R125 and within Balheary Park.

Construction is expected to be completed by summer 2026, and the section of works at Estuary Roundabout by the end of 2026.

To facilitate the safe delivery of the works, Stop/Go traffic management will be in place along Balheary Road, with works undertaken in short sections to minimise disruption.

Temporary relocation of bus stops and localised footpath closures within Balheary Park will also be required, with alternative routes clearly signposted.
