Heneghan detained by Israel; office demands release

Dublin Bay North TD Barry Heneghan

Independent TD for Dublin Bay North, Barry Heneghan, has been detained by Israeli authorities.

The ship Heneghan was on, the Milad, was intercepted by Israeli forces in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Heneghan has been detained, alongside Irish writer Naoise Dolan.

The ship they were on was part of the flotilla, which was looking to deliver aid to Gaza.

The flotilla, which departed from southern Europe earlier this month, was a peaceful humanitarian mission carrying medical and food supplies for civilians in Gaza. According to reports from international media, several vessels in the flotilla have been intercepted by Israeli naval forces in recent days, with a number of participants, including Irish citizens, now in custody.

Finglas man Diarmuid Mac Dubhglais and Sinn Féin Senator Chris Andrews were among the Irish people detained by Israel last week, but returned to Ireland on Monday night after being released.

Speaking before his detention, Heneghan said the flotilla represented “a humanitarian effort to bring hope and essential aid to a population enduring immense suffering,” adding that “whatever the Israelis do to us, it’s nothing compared to what Palestinians endure every single day.”

Heneghan’s office is calling on the government, to 2continue to do all they can to secure his immediate and safe release, as well as to ensure the protection of all detained Irish citizens and humanitarian workers.”
