Bronntanas: New Irish Language Festival for Families in Fingal

Sarah Sparkles brings interactive story-telling to the Bronntanas Festival

This week, Fingal Libraries is teaming up with Gaeilge365 to host Bronntanas, a new festival celebrating the possibilities the Irish language creates for families.

Through games, music, art and fun, Irish takes centre stage at this vibrant celebration in libraries across the Dublin region.

Bronntanas, meaning gift in Irish, captures the festival’s mission to present the Irish language as a precious gift to be shared and enjoyed.

The festival is designed to be inclusive, with events that will help parents and children create memories through Irish, regardless of whether they are fluent speakers or only have a few words.

As part of the festival, family-friendly Irish-language events are being held in Fingal Libraries on Friday 26th and Saturday 27th September.

The focus is on active, joyful engagement rather than formal lessons, with interactive learning helping people to discover Irish together.

Mayor of Fingal, Cllr Tom O’Leary said: “The festival offers a fun, supportive, and enriching space for families to connect with one another and learn more about the Irish language.

“It’s a great opportunity for everyone, regardless of age or ability, to build up their confidence about using Irish together through engaging events.

“The ultimate goal is to create a memorable experience that inspires a lasting love for Irish, which families can continue to nurture at home.”

The festival programme includes a hilarious interactive show in Blanchardstown Library with panto, fun, and lively Irish, family Bodhrán workshops in Swords and Baldoyle Libraries, a hands-on pottery workshop in Donabate Library, a traditional art and artificial intelligence workshop in Malahide Library, a fun introduction to traditional music in Rush Library and an interactive mystery game in Balbriggan Library.

County Librarian Betty Boardman said: “Fingal Libraries are delighted to be taking part in the Bronntanas Festival. We are committed to providing families with opportunities to speak and hear Irish in the community though participation in lively creative experiences.”
