Works are underway on phase two of a new cemetery at Kellystown, with Fingal County Council expecting the much needed facility to be operational in early 2026.

This comes after Kealy Construction were appointed to deliver the significant community infrastructure in the Dublin 15 area.

The Council has successfully adopted a phased approach to delivery of cemeteries at Flemington and Balgriffin and a similar approach is being taken at Kellystown.

The second phase will provide approximately 650 grave plots, structures for the storage of ashes including columbarium walls and memorial plots, a small services building and site infrastructure and landscaping.

The first phase of development in 2019 saw an access road and provision of site services from the new Kellystown Link Road and Diswellstown Road extension.

Provision for future phases on the 3.7 hectare site is included in the current design and when fully developed the overall cemetery site will have a capacity for 3,000 burial plots, 500 niches for human ashes in columbarium walls, 500 memorial plots, gathering and reflection areas, and a small services building housing office and public toilets with car parking.

Landscaping forms a significant part of the design with intention to form calm, reflective, outdoor spaces.

A central processional pathway leading from the carpark at entrance will allow outdoor spaces for reflection and connect various landscaped fields of graves.

A landscaped  angel garden will be provided. Existing hedgerows and trees on site will be retained and supplemented with additional planting.

The Deputy Mayor of Fingal, Cllr JK Onwumereh said: “I am delighted that Kellystown Cemetery has reached this significant stage of development and will be open from early 2026. It meets a growing demand for cemetery space in Dublin 15 and will be welcomed by everybody in the local community.”

The Chief Executive of Fingal County Council, AnnMarie Farrelly, said: “Planning permission for this development was granted in 2016 and I am pleased that the project can now progress with the next stage now that construction is underway.

“Providing community infrastructure such as Kellystown Cemetery is a key part of what Fingal County Council does and this is an excellent example of how we use our funding from sources like development levies and local property tax.”

The Council’s Operations Department is fully funding  the delivery of this project with €3.15m from the Council’s agreed Capital Programme 2025-27 and will take over the operation of the new cemetery when it opens in early 2026.

The new cemetery will be regulated under Fingal County Council’s  Burial Ground Bye Laws.

The detail design has been developed by Denis Byrne Architects working with Brady Shipman Martin Landscape Architects, PUNCH engineers, JAK engineers and Austin Reddy & Partners.
