Local man with MND shares story ahead of IMNDA’s Walk While You Can

The Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association (IMNDA) is reminding people across Ireland to walk 5K on or around this Saturday, October 19, to raise vital funds and awareness for those living with Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

Kevin Carroll from Clontarf was diagnosed with MND in 2022 and, together with his wife Margaret, is fronting the campaign for 2024.

Kevin was diagnosed after noticing weakness in his left hand while playing the piano.

Before his diagnosis, Kevin led a very active retirement, enjoying the outdoors, playing music, and engaging with his community.

His diagnosis came as a shock.

Over time, Kevin has had to give up activities he once loved, including playing music, cooking and driving but also day to day activities.

“I am unable to carry out many of the normal activities of everyday life such as dressing myself, preparing meals, making a cup of tea and more recently shaving. With my particular form of MND, I have no choice.”

Despite these challenges, Kevin has found ways to adapt. “I think there has to be a period of adaptation and over time, an acceptance, a letting go and, dare I say, a surrender to something over which you have limited control.

“And like it or not I have become more dependent on others for the daily things that we can all take for granted.

“MND forces you to let go of certain things, but it’s important to focus on what you can still do,” Kevin explains.

While his physical limitations have increased, Kevin continues to walk, socialise, and spend meaningful time with his family.

Kevin is now encouraging others to support the MND community by taking part in Walk While You Can and plans to take part this Saturday 19th October with his family along the seafront in Clontarf.

“People have been so generous with their donations already, I cannot thank everybody enough.

“And my family and friends have been an incredible support in organising this event and so many others.

“This walk on Saturday is not just for me, but for all of us affected by this disease. Every step matters.”

Kevin Burn, CEO of IMNDA, stresses the importance of this campaign during a time when demand for the organisation’s services is at an all-time high.

“Motor Neurone Disease impacts not only those diagnosed but also their families and friends.

“Right now, we are supporting more people than ever before, and the need continues to grow.

“By taking part in Walk While You Can, you are helping to provide essential care and support to hundreds of families in need. Every contribution makes a tangible difference.”

IMNDA is calling on everyone across Ireland to take part in a 5K walk, whether individually or as part of a group, to support those living with MND and their families.
