Fianna Fáil has chosen veteran councillor Tom Brabazon as their general election candidate in Dublin Bay North.
Brabazon has been a member of Dublin City Council since 2003, and was recently re-elected to his 5th full term on Dublin City Council.
The Donaghmede councillor was selected at a selection convention on Wednesday.
Brabazon has been entrusted to win the seat currently held by Seán Haughey, who announced earlier this year he would not be seeking re-election.
Haughey was a TD in the precursor constituency of Dublin North-East between 1992 and 2011, losing his seat in the 2011 electoral wipeout for Fianna Fáil.
With the creation of Dublin Bay North in 2016, Haughey won the seat in the new constituency and has been a TD for Dublin Bay North ever since.
At present, there is a vacant seat in Dublin Bay North following Aodhán Ó Ríordáin’s European victory in June for Labour, but it has become increasingly apparent that a by-election will not be necessary as a general election is anticipated this side of Christmas.
Brabazon’s most recent run-out at the polls saw him elected on the first count in Donaghmede, being elected with 20.2% of first preferences, his best-ever showing at a local election.
The current line-up of Dublin Bay North consists of Sinn Féin’s Denise Mitchell, Fine Gael’s Richard Bruton (who is also not running at the next general election), Cian O’Callaghan of the Social Democrats and Haughey.
The Dublin Bay North ballot paper has been filling up since July, with Fine Gael stating their intention to win two seats in the constituency.
Councillors Aoibhinn Tormey and Naoise Ó Muirí are looking to win two of the five available seats for the party.
Fianna Fáil ran two candidate in Dublin Bay North in 2020 (Haughey and councillor Deirdre Heney) but have opted for one candidate this time out.
Cian O’Callaghan was confirmed as the Social Democrats candidate earlier this summer.
The Greens will be running David Healy in the seat as he makes his 6th bid for a Dáil seat.
Clontarf councillor Barry Heneghan will look to win a seat as an independent.
People Before Profit have selected their 2020 general election candidate Bernard Mulvany as their general election candidate.
Sinn Féin and Labour are yet to reveal who their general election candidates will be, but it can be assumed that Denise Mitchell, who topped the poll for Sinn Féin in 2020, will be seeking re-election.
The question with Sinn Féin is if they bring in a candidate alongside Mitchell.
Labour’s pick to succeed Aodhán Ó Ríordáin is less cut and dry, but names like Clontarf councillor Ali Field or unsuccessful Donaghmede candidate Shane Folan have been floated.
