Fianna Fáil has confirmed that Caio Benicio, who gained national attention for intervening in last November’s Parnell Square stabbing incident, will stand as a candidate in June’s local elections.
Benicio, who was working as a delivery driver when the incident took place, used his helmet to hit the man who attacked a woman and three children in Dublin city.
A GoFundMe set up in Benico’s honour raised over €370,000.
Benicio will run in the North Inner City constituency for the party.
Benicio will appear on the ballot alongside Anne-Marie Connolly and Isabel Oliveira.
A party spokesperson said “Caio wanted to play a greater role in his community and has decided politics is a way of doing that. We are very pleased he has chosen to run for Fianna Fáil and we believe he will make a fine candidate for the North Inner City.”
