BALDOYLE Family Resources Services has been given a colourful boost with the addition of a new mural in their front car park.
The mural, whose theme is colourful birds, was painted by the centre’s ‘G-Force’ young women’s group with the assistance of local teacher and artist Louise Kelly.
‘G-Force’ was formed after the girls completed the Working Things Out (WTO) programme, with the centre’s project worker Niamh Dowdall.
WTO aims to help young people build communication and conflict resolution skills in order to help them improve their relationships within their families, in school and in the community.
Following the end of the programme the girls wished to continue meeting as a group and ‘G-Force’ was established.
A number of the girls sat their Leaving Certificate this year and wished to do something to mark the end of their school journey and also to give back to the community.
The idea of the mural was born and the girls got busy planning the theme. Once the exams were over they came daily, put on their boiler suits, got out their paint brushes and went to work. While the mural was ongoing, sadly a former CE participant in the centre, Tommy Searson, passed away after a long illness.
Tommy was much loved in the centre and the girls obliged staff in allowing them to paint flowers at the end of the mural in memory of Tommy.
Over two weeks staff and members of the community watched the space transform from a dull grey wall into a spectacular array of colour.
The end result is phenomenal and will be treasured by the centre for years to come. The mural was mostly financed by Fingal County Council to whom the girls and the centre are grateful.
