WORK is set to begin next week to safeguard the water supply for over 20,000 residents and businesses in Howth.
Irish Water, working in partnership with Fingal County Council, is constructing a new 6km water main from Bayside to the existing Howth Reservoir (Drumgriffen).
The work, which is scheduled to commence on June 20 and finish in late 2020, will include the upgrade of Corr Bridge pumping station, a new pumping station at Howth Reservoir and an additional disinfection facility at the reservoir.
Once completed the project will provide a safer more secure water supply for homes and businesses in Howth.
This project is being delivered alongside similar ones on the Northside in Malahide and Balbriggan, representing an Irish Water investment of almost €22 million to safeguard the water supply in these communities.
Irish Water said it has planned the works in short sections in order to limit disruption. Traffic management will be in place over the course of the works so as to minimise traffic disruption.
Emergency access will be maintained at all times.
Speaking about the project, William McKnight, Irish Water, said: “The construction of a new 6km water main in Howth is vital to ensure a safer and a more secure water supply to homes and businesses in the area and will also support the economic and social development of the area.
“The works in Howth form part of a significant investment of almost €22 million by Irish Water to safeguard the water supply in Fingal.
“Upgrading the water infrastructure will ensure that customers in Howth, Malahide and Balbriggan will have a more reliable and secure supply which will result in fewer disruptions to their water supply.”
Mr McKnight added: “Irish Water understands this type of work can be inconvenient and we will ensure our work crews make every effort to minimise any disruption these works may cause.”
The following locations will be impacted by the work: Howth Road, Moyclare Road, Burrow Road, Claremont Road, Balkill Road, Baldoyle Road, Station Road, Seagrange Park, Lauder Lane and Tramway Walking Trail.
Irish Water said residents in these areas will be notified in advance of any works. John Craddock Limited is carrying out the work on behalf of Irish Water.
