A local community activist has congratulated everyone who was involved in a very special event that saw some football legends arrive in the area.
A team comprising former Celtic stars travelled to Darndale to play a football match, much to the delight of locals.
The Celtic Legends team included John Hartson, Jackie McNamara, Alan Stubbs, Tom Boyd, Joe Millar, Brian McClair, Simon Donnelly, Tommy Johnston, Bobby Petta, Mark Burchill and Stiliyan Petrov.
Madeleine Ebbs, who works for Dublin City Council’s community section, said: “Without a doubt, all the efforts paid off. We estimate that we had approximately 4,000 people in attendance and the atmosphere was absolutely brilliant.”
Dublin City Council, Darndale FC, Sphere 17, Elsa Security and the gardaí went all out on the day, bringing in the ‘Equine and Canine’ units, not to mention the Lord Mayor Niall Ring, who played on the day for Celtic, and 50 dedicated volunteers from the locality.
“The feedback we are receiving is tremendous,” she added. “Even our visitors, the Celtic Legends, agreed it was one of their most enjoyable ventures and can’t wait to be asked back.”
Ms Ebbs said it was great to see all the agencies working so well together.
“Hopefully this will continue over the coming years,” she stated.
“Quite a number of boxes were ticked in the lead up to this event: supporting cohesion and developing local capacity; supporting young people; promoting and supporting sporting activities for the local communities; promoting community responsibility; and, most importantly, environmental awareness.”
