MINISTER for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed has announced funding of €60,000 and €56,250 for Rush and Balbriggan harbours respectively.
Rush Harbour is receiving its allocation to allow for the lift and relay of a section of the original stones on the pier surface.
This is vital work for the upkeep of this protected structure and will include the importing of additional stone where necessary.
Balbriggan Harbour is being granted €56,250 in funding for the provision of services supply points, specifically for water and electricity, on the southern side of the harbour.
This is to improve the facilities in place for fishermen operating from that part of the internal harbour.
Dublin Fingal TD Alan Farrell (FG) welcomed the announcement.
“Ensuring our harbours are maintained to the highest possible standard and receive investment for the improvements they require is of the utmost importance in terms of supporting the local community, and indeed making our coastal communities more attractive to visitors,” he said.
“Those working in and around our harbours must be provided with the facilities they require to support them in their daily work.”
Senator James Reilly (FG) also welcomed the funding.
“In addition to an immediate employment spin off during the works, this funding contributes to the ongoing development of fishing related activities, increasing participation in marine leisure and supplementing measures to attract greater numbers of tourists which ultimately create the environment for sustainable job creation opportunities in rural locations,” said Senator Reilly.
The Local Authority programme forms part of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine’s 2019 Fishery Harbour and Coastal Infrastructure Development Programme, whereby the Department co-funds up to 75 percent of the total cost of approved projects with the Local Authority providing the balance.
