IT’S not every day that a football legend visits your community.
Well, that’s what happened in Darndale earlier this month when former Man Utd and Celtic star Brian McClair arrived on the Northside to launch a Celtic Legends match that will be taking place on May 4, 2019.
During his visit, McClair, a prolific striker who was a serial winner under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford, met approximately 350 children from the Junior and Senior Schools in Darndale.
Next year’s celebrity match will be sponsored by Dublin City Council, the FAI, the North Dublin Schoolboys’ League (NDSL), Clayton Hotel and a host of other local businesses and organisations.
The aim of the event is to positively promote the good work that is being done in the area by the coaches and volunteers around the football.
In May 2018, Darndale Football Club had less than 20 players, but since a celebrity match played in September of this year, featuring a number of Soap stars, the number has steadily grown to a whopping 85 boys and girls.
There is also the possibility of another 40 to 50 players signing up once the new season starts in February.
Teams at the club have been very busy over the last few months playing home and away games. Earlier this month, they were invited to Belfast to play Belvoir FC and apparently they were treated “like royalty”. The Northern Irish club could not have been more welcoming, so much so that Darndale FC have invited them down to Dublin as special guests on May 4, 2019.
to play their under 11s.
