EFFORTS to reduce the number of trespass incidents at a Northside train station have been stepped up.
Iarnród Éireann has installed anti-trespass mats at platform ends in Kilbarrack Station, as part of its ongoing efforts to curb the serious problem.
The company has previously highlighted the number of alarming incidents at the station, which include parents carrying buggies across the track, cyclists bringing bikes across the track, and individuals involved in near misses.
The mats have been used in other railways, and have seen a reduction in incidents by providing an impediment to track access on ramped ends of platforms.
In addition, recent increases in security resources and monitoring at the station will help to tackle the trespass issue.
A spokesperson for Iarnród Éireann told Northside People: “Any one of these trespass incidents at Kilbarrack in the past could have resulted in a tragic and needless death or catastrophic injuries.
“A parent carrying a stroller who falls and hurts themselves or their child leaves the driver of the train in an impossible situation – trains take considerable distances to come to a halt even at moderate speeds, and a train cannot swerve around a stricken trespasser.
“Furthermore, modern tracks and trains are a lot more silent and customers may not be aware they are approaching.
“Trespassers have been seen crossing with headphones meaning their awareness will be dramatically reduced.”
The spokesperson added: “While we will take measures to deter trespass, ultimately adults must show example by ceasing this reckless practice, and ensure children do not begin a practice which could lead to an early death.”
