Yasmin Meredith won a gold medal in Bulgaria.

A NORTHSIDE boxer was celebrating recently after winning a gold medal at the European Schoolboy/Schoolgirl Championships held in Albena, Bulgaria.

Yasmin Meredith (14), from Coolock, made history when she secured Ireland’s first gold at the championships.

Two other Irish girls, Kaci Crowley and Winnie Christina McDonagh, and one of the boys on the team, Michael Faulkner, added three further gold medals in their respective categories at the event.

In total, the Irish team comprised 19 males and 12 females, the largest panel the Irish Athletic Boxing Association (IABA) has ever sent to an international event in its 107-year history.

The IABA used the previous month’s National Boys and Girls Championships as part of their selection process for Albena.

A week before she travelled to Albena, Yasmin, a member of Glasnevin Boxing Club, won the National Girl3 53Kg National Championship.

In Bulgaria, Yasmin defeated an Italian and Romanian girl in the first and second round respectively. She stopped both girls in the second round of each bout.

Yasmin’s brilliant form continued in the final where she defeated her Russian opponent, Ariana Vostrikova, with a top class display of boxing.
