WORK has finally commenced on a long-awaited building project for a Northside school.
The new €10.1 million facility will allow Lusk Community College to increase its student capacity by an extra 650 students.
The project, which is the second phase of accommodation for the college, will provide permanent accommodation to cater for the projected enrolment of 1,000 pupils including a special needs unit, a sports hall with fitness suite and changing facilities, and ancillary accommodation.
The project, which commenced on site earlier this month, is expected to take approximately 18 months to complete.
Local Senator, James Reilly (FG), and Dublin Fingal TD Alan Farrell (FG) were among those to welcome the news.
“I am delighted for the parents, pupils and teachers in Lusk and surrounding catchment area who will use this excellent school,” said Senator Reilly.
“New facilities are needed at this school including a special needs unit, a sports hall with a fitness suite and changing facilities and a school library which I understand will all be provided in the new facility.
“Lusk has a population of approximately 10,000 with a young demographic. There is obvious demand for school places going forward.”
Deputy Farrell told Northside People: “I will continue to actively engage with my Fine Gael colleague, the Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton TD, and his Department to ensure any unnecessary delays are avoided and Phase 2 is completed on schedule.
“Furthermore, it is vital that ongoing investment in our educational infrastructure continues in every community across Dublin Fingal in order to ensure our children and young people receive their education in an environment which is conducive to their learning.”
