RESIDENTS in Rush and surrounding areas received an end-of-year boost with news that the local Garda Station WILL reopen.
Minister of Justice and Equality Charlie Flanagan TD has published a Garda report on the reopening of six former Garda Stations, which includes Rush.
The Garda Commissioner has submitted his final report in relation to the pilot scheme to reopen the six stations in accordance with the Programme for Government.
Minister Flanagan briefed the Government on the report which was noted by Cabinet. The Garda Commissioner has informed Minister Flanagan that he has decided to reopen the former Garda station at Rush, and has written to the Office of Public Works (OPW) to progress the matter.
Dublin Fingal TD Alan Farrell (FG) and local Senator James Reilly (FG) have both welcomed the latest development in the saga.
Deputy Farrell said: “The whole community can look forward to a safer future with a dedicated Garda presence back on our streets.
“It has always been my view that the closure of Rush Garda Station was the wrong decision.
“The station’s closure has damaged the local community, leaving them feeling significantly less safe and less secure.”
Senator Reilly also said the station’s closure was the wrong decision.
“This is a major victory for local residents who have worked so hard on this issue for so long,” he said.
“The reopening of our Garda station shows this Government’s commitment to strengthening our community and building a sustainable future.”
As part of Government cutbacks during the recession, the station was closed down in early 2012 causing a serious void in policing in the area.
