THERE was an incredible turnout of almost 300 volunteers earlier this month for a Sutton Creek beach clean.
Local woman Rebecca Flanagan, who was involved in organising the event, said: “Patrick Jackson and myself met over a month ago and since we had so much in common in terms of our commitment to the environment we decided to join forces and organise a big beach clean.
“We invited every individual and business in the community to join us in our effort to turn this beach around.
“Sutton Creek beach is one of the dirtiest beaches along the Dublin Bay coastline. I was so proud of our wonderful community with nearly 300 volunteers joining forces throughout the day to clear the beach of marine debris.
“Two Fingal County Council pick-up trucks were filled and I'm estimating that over one tonne of debris was collected.
“It was great to see a wide range of our community working side-by-side with a common incentive to tackle environmental pollution.”
Ms Flanagan said climate change is the biggest issue the younger generation is going to face.
“If we think of all the different types of material we collected on the beach we can see the issues wildlife and the oceans are dealing with,” she added.
“As well as volunteers we had lots of support and donations from the community which made the experience a really fun-filled day.”
