Last week we posted a photograph of one of Ireland’s most popular live bands ever, The Memories.
The band formed in the 1960s during the showband era. And despite various line-up changes over the years, they were one of the most enduring acts on the gig scene for four decades.
Many of our readers will recall their legendary Monday night residency in the show bar of the St Lawrence Hotel in Howth, where their blistering rock set attracted punters from all over the city.
Although they wrote many of their own songs, The Memories were renowned for their near-perfect renditions of rock classics – most famously, Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. This was a song so notoriously difficult to replicate on stage that even Queen shied away from performing the whole song live.
But as this old video footage proves, it was all in a day’s work for The Memories. Legend has it that Freddie Mercury himself slipped into a pub to witness the band perform his song when Queen played Slane in 1986.
So here it is in all its glory – The Memories’ incredible version of ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.
