Kilbarrack students enjoy charity fundraising event

ABACAS Kilbarrack, a special school for over 40 children with autism and complex needs, held its second annual 5km fundraising run recently at Father Collins Park.

The event had a twist – it was run by the students themselves who trained with their teachers in preparation.

The money raised in 2016 was significant and has already been invested in a much needed new playground and an in-ground trampoline for the children, along with other equipment specific to their needs, such as special furniture for students with OT needs, weighted vests and other sensory equipment.

The long-term goal is the development of a new school to replace the “rundown” prefabs that are no longer suitable for the students.

Kilbarrack Shopping Centre kindly agreed to be a sponsor this year’s event.

The centre’s management said: “We are a community based shopping centre with a big heart and proud to support such a worthwhile event.”

Minister for Disabilities Finian McGrath attended the event to show his support.

“I’m always proud to be involved with such worthwhile events,” said Minister McGrath.

School principal Cristopher Platt said they were delighted to continue this very worthwhile fundraiser this year.

“Our teachers have seen remarkable progress in students who have come here,” he stated.
