A NORTHSIDE student was the star of the show at his school recently when he had his hair shaved for a very worthy cause.
Stephen Green, a sixth class student at St Joseph’s CBS Primary in Fairview, had been growing his hair for over a year with the intention of getting it cut for charity.
Stephen wanted to donate his hair to the Rapunzel Foundation which makes wigs for those undergoing treatment for cancer, and also to raise money for the Childhood Cancer Foundation.
His initial target was €500, but within the space of just over a week, he raised over €2,000.
Kevin Gillen, Principal of St Joseph’s CBS Primary, said: “Stephen wanted to have his hair shaved in front of the whole school during the final assembly before the Easter break to help raise awareness among students and staff.
“It created a great atmosphere around the school in the days leading up to it, with other boys showing their support to Stephen through making donations and giving him plenty of encouragement.
“While he was getting his hair shaved the whole school sat and watched cheering him on. They were supporting him in the same way they would support the Dubs in Croke Park!”
Mr Gillen added: “Not only did Stephen raise money and awareness for his chosen charities, but also he created a lovely atmosphere in the school and was an example not just to his peers, but to all those who work in the school too. We are very proud of him at Joey’s.”
