Northside school stands up to bullying

Students and teachers at O'Connell Secondary School help launch the new bangle.

NORTHSIDE students took to the streets last week to raise awareness of bullying.

Students and teachers at O’Connell Secondary School helped the ISPCC launch a new bangle that will be sold in Penneys’ stores nationwide.

Last year, the Penneys bangles raised over €36,000 for the Shield Anti-Bullying programme.

The ISPCC bangle features the Shield pendant with a bangle for women and a band for men.

Both feature the Blue Shield colour. The bangles cost just €2.50 and you can also buy Shield pins, which cost €2, at all Penneys outlets nationwide.

All profits will be donated to the ISPCC Shield programme.

IPSCC Chief Executive Grainia Long stated: “In 2015, 7,048 contacts were made to Childline about bullying. The young people we work with in our mentoring and emotional and behavioural support services in the community also bring up bullying as a key issue for them.”

The Shield Programme is available to schools, clubs and other groups working with young people, with a range of supports to help them to tackle and prevent bullying.

Lynn Kidney, Deputy Principal stated: “We in O’Connell Secondary School are dedicated to the anti-bullying cause.

Our ‘Be Buddies not Bullies’ campaign is embedded in all aspects of our school.”

from our ‘Peer Mentoring’ programme between first and fifth yrs to the ‘Stand Up and Report’ shield we are launching on our website, oconnellschool.ie. We recognise how important this is for our school and for other schools across Dublin and we are delighted to get involved with promoting the anti-bullying cause.

“What you wear can make a difference. Buy your bangle in any Penneys stores across Dublin and help support a really good cause.”
