Blue Flag beach in Portmarnock slapped with swimming ban

Blue Flag beach in Portmarnock slapped with swimming ban

A NORTH Dublin beach awarded a coveted Blue Flag just two weeks ago was slapped with a ‘Do Not Swim’ notice today by Fingal County Council.

A notice was put in place at Velvet Strand in Portmarnock as “a precationary measure”, according to the council, as well as at Balbriggan Front Strand and Skerries South Beach.

It follows overflows caused by technical errors at the pumping stations at Portmarnock Strand and Hampton Cove pumping stations.

Paul Reid, the chief executive of Fingal County Council, said he had been assured by Irish Water that they view the issue as serious and engineers are currently on site.

The notices will remain in place until at least Thursday when the results of water testing will be known.

We reported just last week that Portmarnock, as well as Balcarrick in Donabate, had been awarded Blue Flags.
