LOCAL people of all ages are being encouraged to take part in a special reading initiative taking place on Friday, April 29.

The Junior Certificate School Programme (JCSP) Demonstration Library Project, in collaboration with Poetry Ireland, is inviting the entire nation to take time out and to ‘Drop Everything and Read’ (DEAR) for 20 minutes at 12noon on this date.

Eoin Colfer, bestselling author, Laureate na nÓg and DEAR Ambassador 2016, is urging people to take part in the initiative.

Ireland’s first national DEAR challenge, which is open to everyone, was launched at the JCSP Library in Plunket College, Whitehall.   It’s very simple – when the clock strikes noon, just drop whatever you’re doing and READ!

The main focus of DEAR is to draw attention to the importance of reading for pleasure. If reading is to become a lifelong habit then young people must see themselves as participants in a community that views reading as a significant and enjoyable activity.

Schools, community groups, individuals and workplaces can register on www.jcsp.ie, where you’ll find information, ideas and inspiration. You can follow on Twitter @dear_Ireland and share your comments, photos and video clips using #DEARIrl or send to dear@jcsplibraries.ie
