High house prices down to government policy, Hearne says

House price inflation in Ireland is at a 10-year high and Social Democrats TD and housing spokesperson Rory Hearne is pointing the finger squarely at Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael.

Daft.ie’s Q2 2025 Residential Property Price report shows that house price inflation is at a 10-year high.

According to Hearne, the situation has been worsened by the government being so keen to satisfiy investor funds and let them play a bigger part in shaping housing policy.

“House price inflation has reached a new record since the Central Bank’s mortgage-lending rules were introduced in 2015 – how can this government, like previous ones, claim housing is their highest priority?” the Dublin North-West TD asked.

Hearne said the government’s policy simply isn’t working and is only putting the housing market further into disarray.”

“The policy is driving an entire generation of young people from our shores – the government has shown time and time again that its loyalties lie with the vultures, not with the people.”

House prices have risen by up to 15.5% in the last 12 months, per the daft.ie report.

The uptick in housing prices also coincides with homeless figures in Dublin reaching over 10,000 for the first time.

“House prices, rents and homelessness are all at record highs, yet no tangible solutions have been tabled to tackle this crisis,” Hearne said.

He noted that the government are failing to meet even its own modest housing targets.

4,969 housing units have been commenced in Ireland in the first five months of 2025; the same figure for tbe same time period in 2024 was 32,851.

“It’s no surprise, then, that the market has been starved of supply,” Hearne remarked.

“I’m running out of words to describe the catastrophe Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have allowed to fester – the government must commit to a system which prioritises renters and people who want to own their own home, not soulless investor funds.”
