Local snapper helps highlight work in Haiti

TWO and a half years ago the world woke up to news of a catastrophic earthquake in Haiti in which over 300,000 people died and more than a million were left homeless.

For weeks we watched shocking images of the devastation caused by the natural disaster but as the months passed the TV crews left and the global media’s attention moved on to other issues.

But there was no moving on for the millions affected by massive quake – or for the charities that continue to this day to deliver aid to the survivors.

GOAL is one of those charities and last month photographer Leon Farrell from Glasnevin visited one of the charity’s camps along with former rugby international, Shane Byrne, to highlight the on-going vital work there.

More than 350,000 people are still living in temporary shelters in Haiti and instances of cholera are beginning to rise again, with 30,254 cases reported in the first six months of this year.

Leon, who heads up top photo agency Photocall Ireland, and Shane stayed at one of GOAL’s bases in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince where they lent a helping hand to the locals.
