Dublin City Council will celebrate National Tree Week with a series of exciting and educational events taking place from Sunday, 9th March to Sunday, 16th March 2025.
This annual event, organized by the Tree Council of Ireland in collaboration with Coillte, is the largest tree celebration in the country, offering a great opportunity for individuals and communities to come together and appreciate the beauty, significance, and essential role that trees play in our environment.
In the first quarter of 2025 alone, Dublin City Council has already planted over 3,700 trees throughout the city, continuing its efforts to enhance the urban landscape and promote environmental sustainability. This programme of tree planting and tree maintenance ensure that Dublin’s tree population remains healthy, contributing to the city’s ecological well-being, enhancing air quality, and providing greenery for all to enjoy.
The theme for this year’s National Tree Week is ‘Planting Trees, Growing Together.’ This theme not only highlights the importance of planting trees but also emphasizes our collective responsibility in nurturing and maintaining these vital natural resources as well as the role of trees in fostering stronger communities.
While trees are celebrated nationally this week, the Council’s Parks, Biodiversity and Landscapes Services team are dedicated to the care of 100,000 trees year-round.
In 2024 alone, 8,992 trees were inspected and recorded using our tree maintenance app, Arbortrack. Since 2021, over 23,300 trees have been documented on the app. The inventory delivers a wealth of data in relation to Dublin City Council urban forest, notably on tree age and tree condition and inform our annual tree care programme. In 2024, Parks, Biodiversity and Landscapes Services pruned 4,826 trees, removed 271 dangerous or dead trees and maintained several kilometres of hedgerows.
