Bloomsday
The Bloomsday festival is taking place in various locations around the city from Tuesday June 11 to Sunday June 16.
Celebrations include dressing up like characters from the book and in clothes that would have been the style of the era. One of the hallmark fancy dress items of Bloomsday is the straw boater hat.
The James Joyce Centre has been the organiser of the Bloomsday Festival since 1994 and this year’s programme includes everything from lectures, readings, workshops and walking tours to Bloomsday Breakfasts, theatre, music and pub-crawls.
Traditional Bloomsday must-sees are the James Joyce Martello Tower in Sandycove, Sweny’s Chemist on Lincoln Place, Glasnevin Cemetery and Davy Byrne’s Pub on Duke Street. Full programme details at www.bloomsdayfestival.ie.
Dalkey Book Festival
The legendary Stephen Fry will join over 100 speakers in Dalkey for the 10th anniversary of its famous book festival.
From June 13 to 16, authors from around the world will be on the Southside for the annual event. Fry will join some of the world’s leading intellectuals such as three times Pulitzer prize winner, Thomas Friedman, and giants of literature Marlon James, Deborah Levy, Richard Flanagan and Donal Ryan.

Dublin Wine Festival
The Dublin Wine Festival takes place on Sunday, June 16 at the Morrison Hotel.
It’s celebrating the taste of Italian wines and more than 30 of Italy’s finest wine producers, selected in collaboration with A Taste Of Italy, will be travelling to The Morrison where they’ll be sharing their best products including Prosecco, Barolo, Amarone and Chianti.
The ticket (from just under €40) for the public includes tastings from a selection of more than 80 wines and the possibility to buy your favourite wines directly from the producers. Doors will be open from 3-7pm on Sunday.
Ireland: A Survivor’s Guide
Portmarnock-based theatre company High Rock Productions are back this summer with their hit comedy sketch show, ‘Ireland: A Survivor’s Guide’. The show has been running in the International Bar for three summers but following a big jump in demand they’ve added the Sugar Club as a second venue for afternoon shows in July.
It’s an energetic, inventive physical comedy show and has been going down a storm with tourists and locals alike.

Southern Cross Festival
The Southern Cross Festival will take place this Sunday, June 16 in Portmarnock.
The event is held annually to mark the first successful flight from Europe to America, when Charles Kingsford Smith flew the Southern Cross plane from the beach in Portmarnock in 1930.
A day of great entertainment will be provided at two venues: the regular garden party/musical tribute in the gardens of the Portmarnock Hotel and Golf Links and a Pop-Up Hedge School in the parish Centre in Portmarnock village. The events start around 11.30am and all visitors are welcome.
Bingo in Raheny
Bingo takes place at the Raheny GAA Clubhouse, 2 All Saints’ Road every Thursday, from 8.15pm to 10.15pm.
