Viking Fest

A huge celebration of Viking Culture is happening over Easter weekend at Dublinia and Wood Quay from the March 30 to April 2.

This unmissable festival of Viking heritage will feature Living history demonstrations, Viking ships moored and on display in Wood Quay, and will culminate in a live outdoor spectacle with the international Follow the Vikings audio visual and theatrical performance at the historic Wood Quay amphitheatre, celebrating the cultural and historic impact of the Vikings on Saturday, March 31. Irish women and the First World War 

‘Doing their bit: Irish women and the First World War’ is a new exhibition in Dublin City Library and Archive in Pearse Street.

It centres on the impact that the First World War had on the lives of Irish women and the new opportunities that opened up for them.

Two notable women highlighted are Kate Middleton Curtis (pictured), a distinguished member of St John Ambulance in Dublin who referred to herself as ‘The oldest ambulance lady in Ireland’ and Monica Roberts, a young Stillorgan woman who in 1914 established ‘The Band of Helpers for the Soldiers’.

The exhibition runs at Dublin City Library and Archive, 144 Pearse Street, Dublin 2 until April 28.

Exhibition at Dublin Castle 

The Office of Public Works (OPW) invites the public to discover the ‘Making Majesty: Building and Borrowing the Regal Image’ exhibition at Dublin Castle through a series of talks and events running until April 28.  

The exhibition explores the shaping of the royal and viceregal image at Dublin Castle through grand architecture, stately ceremonies and fine furnishings. 

Times: 9.45am–5.45pm (last admission at 5.15pm). Admission: €3. The exhibition is included in the general admission price to the castle (for ticket prices and visitor options, visit www.dublincastle.ie).

Family Fun Day

Deer Park Golf, Howth, is running a Family Fun Day on Easter Saturday, March 31, from 12noon-4pm. 

There will be lots of activities and great fun for all the family with free golf lessons, free footgolf lessons, footdarts, face-painting and golf putting competitions. 

For those looking for a nice stroll, the Rhododendron Gardens will be starting to bloom and the clubhouse will be serving all day breakfast, great lunch options and kiddies’ meals.

Soccer tournament

St Kevin’s Boys’ FC is holding its 10th Under 13 Academy Cup football tournament at its home ground on Shanowen Road, Santry, over the Easter weekend. 

The teams taking part are last year’s winners Barcelona FC, the St Kevin’s Boys Under 13 Premier team, West Bromwich Albion FC, Borussia Dortmund and Bayer 04 Leverkusen, from Germany and Spanish team Atlético de Madrid.

Francesco Turrisi

The Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane sundays@noon concert series on Sunday, April 1 features original solo piano composition and improvisation by Francesco Turrisi.

Inspired by his 10-year journey from the heart of the Mediterranean to the North of Europe, the Turin-born, Dublin-based jazz musician has collaborated with former Miles Davis reedsman Dave Liebman, flamenco icon Pepe El Habichuela, kaval player Theodosii Spassov and singer extraordinaire Maria Pia de Vito.

In spite of his numerous collaborations, it’s as a leader that Turrisi has earned his spurs. His four beautifully crafted solo albums and two co-led releases have garnered widespread critical acclaim and positioned Turrisi as one of the most original voices of his generation.

Mad Hatters Tea Party

The Mad Hatters Tea Party is taking place on Easter Sunday (April 1) from 1-5pm in Deerpark, Mount Merrion.

There will be lots Easter treats to give away on the Easter Trail throughout the day. All you’ve got to do is solve the clues spread across Deerpark to win one of the hundreds of treats that the Easter Bunny has specially delivered.

There’s also a competition for Maddest Hat at the Tea Party in the Hatwalk Fashion Show, and you make your own creation with help from the Make and Do team who’ll have all the materials needed.

The Story of the Central Bank of Ireland

The Central Bank is marking its 75th Anniversary with a new exhibition in North Wall Quay Visitor Centre.

With free entry to the public, the exhibition, entitled ‘75 Years of Change: The Story of the Central Bank of Ireland’ is framed as a journey through Ireland’s history, and the role which the Central Bank has played since its foundation – from the transition of the old Currency Commission to the Central Bank in 1943, right through to the introduction of the euro and the financial crisis.

The exhibition charts eight decades of social, economic and political change in Ireland using rare film footage, previously unseen photographs, documents and blueprints drawn from the Central Bank’s historical archive.

The exhibition is now open to public from 10am to 4pm, Monday to Friday, with group bookings available.

Dublin Comic Con: Anime Edition

Dublin Comic Con: Anime Edition brings media guests from TV and film, comic creators, artists, fans and professionals together for a weekend of talks, workshops, demos, interactive activities and all around great family fun with a strong focus on Anime. Organisers say they’ve got everything from Powerpuff Girls and Mobile Suit Gundam to Walking Dead and Star Trek covered.
