Budding boffins will have a chance to see some sensational science events up close when the Lets Talk Science Festival returns to Ballymun on Saturday, November 19.

The festival will be serving up a jam-packed day of free workshops, experiments and science themed entertainment for the whole family from 11-4pm in the Ballymun Civic Centre.

Nutcracker

Ballet Ireland is touring Nutcracker, one of the world’s favourite ballets, to audiences nationwide this season.

This timeless classic, with beautiful costumes and Tchaikovsky’s beloved & sumptuous score, takes audiences on a wondrous adventure full of quintessential Christmas magic.

It’s happening in the Gaiety Theatre from November 16-19 with tickets costing €26-€45 from Ticketmaster.

 

Des Bishop: Grey Matters

The fantasy of everlasting youth ‘dyed’ with Des’s last purchase of Just for Men over a year ago. Now he is embracing the grey and letting the wisdom of his years inspire his stand up. 

Grey Matters tackles the issues confronting Des these days; returning to live in New York, being surrounded by other people’s kids, gender and marriage equality, the dangers of snapchat, dating a Chinese woman, the prospect of reaching 40 and most of all, after the documentary-style stand up show about his time in China, Des is looking forward to returning to straight stand up where he can riff about whatever is on his mind.

Shadow of a Gunman

Dublin, 1920 and Ireland is in a state of civil war. Donal Davoren’s neighbours think he is an IRA gunman on the run. He isn’t. He is a poet. But the accusation gives him notoriety that wins the affection of Minnie Powell, an attractive young woman in the tenement … and he doesn’t dispute it!

Christ Church Concert

Continuing on its busy autumn touring schedule and before becoming completely festive in December, Chamber Choir Ireland presents ‘Bachiana’ this Saturday, November 19 at Christ Church Cathedral at 8pm.  

Taking its title from Bachianas Brasilieras by Villa-Lobos, this is quite the musical journey where South America meets Europe, and the 20th century hurtles back to the 18th century.  

Villa-Lobos takes the baroque style prelude and fugue influence into his treatment of Brazilian folk, Mauricio Kagel, born in Argentina, but moved to Germany continues the chorale tradition, while Berg and Bach expose the Baroque and 20th century treatments of the chorale.

Dub Web Fest 

Dub Web Fest, Ireland’s first web festival, is running from November 18-20 at Filmbase, Temple Bar. 

This is the second year of the event and the team plans to surpass last year’s success, spurred on by confirmation of the attendance of Game of Thrones actor Eddie Jackson and 12-year-old Dubliner Ryan Wyer, director of Aphex Twin’s first music video in nearly 20 years.

The web fest screens a range of web series from comedy, horror, drama to LGBT, documentaries and music videos.

The Dub Web Fest is the perfect venue to unite the movers and makers of the digital media and technology worlds, promoting web series and digital content creation around the world.

Percy French Tribute

Malahide Lions Club is hosting what promises to be a terrific evening of high quality music, song, fun and laughter this weekend.

An Evening of Percy French Songs, Poems and Laughter – presented by the Percy French Troubadours – will take place at the Grand Hotel Malahide this Saturday, November 19 at 8pm.      

All proceeds go to St Francis Hospice, Raheny.

The very talented Troubadours who hail from Blanchardstown, have been on the road for four years and have raised more than €50,000 for various charities to date.

Science Week

To celebrate National Science Week (November 13 to 20), Makeshop, a project by Science Gallery at Trinity College Dublin, is coming to Killinarden Community Centre for four jam-packed days of free hands-on workshops.

This is a one-of-a-kind workshop space where people of all ages can explore and experiment with design, science, art and technology through hands-on activities. During Science Week, they’ll be hitting the road from their home in Lincoln Place to bring a range of workshops to Killinarden – and with no experience necessary, it’s the perfect opportunity for children and teenagers in the local area to try their hands at coding, engineering and electronics for free.
